Can you domesticate a fox?

I found a little fox on my property a few months ago. I didn't see its mom anywhere and it didn't look like it was big enough to hunt yet. I started feeding it some food now it will eat out of my hands and let me pet it.

Have you ever owned a fox? It seems to like normal dog food.

Yes. I have an arctic fox, but I would not say I own her as she pretty much does her own thing. She is certainly not a dog or a cat, and I respect that. I got her from a breeder, LEGALLY. And I do not feed her dog food, I feed her food that has been specially formulated for foxes by fur farms.

However, unless you live in Arkansas (the only state where you may take a fox from

I have never owned a fox because where I live, it's illegal to domesticate wild foxes... and wild foxes are the only foxes in my area. I don't know why you would just start feeding a random fox just because his mom wasn't anywhere to be seen and you probably shouldn't have done it but you did.

I read an article in National Geographic about how in places in Russia silver foxes

Nope. Had a friend who had one though. He had to get rid of Serena after a few years because she started hunting and eating the neighbor's cats.

Call your wildlife hotline and have them come and pick the fox up. It is still a wild animal and tames only last as long as THEY choose.

Epic: No they are not. Foxes may be in the Canid family but there are on their own

No. I would never own a fox because I respect the laws of my state which say that it is illegal to be in possession of a wild animal or rehabilitate a wild animal unless you have permitted it. Keeping a wild animal is a bad idea and the best thing for the animal is to go to a licensed rehabilitator. You can find one in your area by going to the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association website at www.nwrawildlife.org

They're not pets. If the mother is actually nowhere around, it needs to be trapped and given to a rescue who can care for it properly. If the mother is, you need to leave the animal be.
